Honda Civic GX named Green Car of the Year at LA Auto Show
It might not look like a speedster, but the Honda Civic GX has finished in first place - in the race for 2012's Green Car of the Year award. Facing smoggy cities and climbing gasoline prices, most carmakers are gambling on U.S. consumers finally getting serious about alternative-fueled cars. All-electrics and hybrids have hit the mainstream U.S. market, but Honda is the only one revving compressed natural gas -- or CNG -- passenger car production for nationwide release. Discoveries of new U.S. natural gas deposits have pushed down prices to around $2.00 a gallon -- That's nearly 40 percent less than the price of regular gasoline. The eco-conscious can feel good that it emits 30 percent less carbon dioxide. And compared to the hours needed to recharge an electric car, the CNG takes only a few minutes to refill and has a longer range -- up to 250 miles. Designers made the tank from the same super-strength material as body armor to keep fuel stable. The gas tank is made of a carbon fiber material, to contain the pressure required of the compressed natural gas.
