2012 Hyundai Veloster Honored for Its Style by eCityofStyle

The 2012 Veloster, a unique, three-door coupe, marks the second consecutive year the Korean manufacturer has won an award. The Hyundai Equus, the brand's halo vehicle, was the recipient of an auto style award for the 2011 model year.
“Gone are the days of Hyundai's budget car status. Today, the Korean automaker is a legitimate threat to the establishment, designing cars that look considerably more expensive than they really are,” said eCityofStyle editors in a news release. “The Veloster is perhaps Hyundai's most successful execution of its new design language, called Fluidic Sculpture. From the tight front end to the sculpted side creases to the powerful wheel arches, the Veloster's exterior is both aggressive and sleek.”
eCityofStyle.com and eCityofTravel.com are for fashion-conscious consumers and discerning travelers. eCityofStyle.com informs readers about the latest fashion and design trends in a user-friendly format that is organized in easy-to-navigate sections such as Her, Him, Home, Life, Auto and Xtra (a special feature & celebrity-driven events section).
“With Veloster, we want to show consumers that high style and reasonable pricing can go hand in hand,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Veloster stands out from the crowd with a stylish yet functional design. We’re honored that eCityofStyle is recognizing the beautiful design and unique personality of the car.”
Honda Odyssey: new look, new price
Honda’s upgraded Odyssey seven-seater goes on sale this week featuring sharper looks and reduced prices of up to $2000.
Priced from $37,100 (plus on-road costs), the base-model Odyssey receives a $2000 price cut and gains a satellite navigation system with integrated rear-view camera and Honda’s “Econ assist” system, which teaches the driver the ways of frugal motoring, and gearshift paddles.
It also gets a minor facelift, with a new-look grille, bumper and tail-lights.
The top-shelf Luxury model (from $44,920) is $1000 less than before and gains the same styling changes while also adding newly designed alloy wheels.
The Odyssey was last week crowned Drive’s Car of the Year winner in the people-mover category for the third year running.

Russ, thank you for your kind words. We are happy to have helped you.
"My car was on it's last leg and the repair costs outweighed its remaining value. Now, I dread going shopping for a new car because of the haggling involved over the price and financing, however I couldn't be more pleased at the experience I had with O'Hare Hyundai. My twin brother and I were looking for the same car...A Hyundai Elantra (Limited). When we arrived at O'Hare Hyundai we were greeted by Bob Gold as we checked out the inventory on the lot. Bob was amazing! He was friendly, knowledgeable, and made us feel comfortable instantly. He took the time to explain every detail of the car from bumper to bumper and I never felt rushed or pressured. His courteous and helpful attitude made my animosity about buying a new car just melt away! Dan Chatfield made the finance part of the experience go very smoothly. He was willing to work with us in order to make sure everyone was happy with the deal. I couldn't be happier with how we were treated. Needless to say, my brother and I are now proud owners of brand new 2012 Elantras. Mine in silver, his in grey. From start to finish...a wonderful experience! Thanks!
Sincerely,Russ"

Hyundai Elantra Wins ALG Residual Value Award for Second Year in a Row
Hyundai announced that the 2012 Elantra has received a Residual Value Award from ALG in the Compact Car segment. ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation data, annually recognizes automakers' outstanding achievements in producing new vehicles that are predicted to retain the highest percentage of their original price after a conventional three-year period. Awards are given in 19 vehicle categories. This year's awards are based on 2012 model year vehicles.
"The Elantra's eye-catching sporty profile and upscale interior, combined with Hyundai's increasing image of quality, earn the model its second consecutive win in the Compact Car segment," said Raj Sundaram, ALG. "High demand and minimal incentives also help it nab the top spot."
Award winners are determined through careful study of the competition in each segment, historical vehicle performance and industry trends. Vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand, and pricing and marketing strategies remain the key factors that affect ALG's residual value forecasts.
"Hyundai's Elantra stands out in the competitive compact segment, offering innovation, content, style, and 40 mpg highway standard fuel economy," said Mike O'Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. "Strong residual value is an important element in Hyundai's overall value equation, reducing the overall cost of ownership and allowing us to offer customers the Hyundai Assurance Trade-In Value Guarantee."
The Trade-In Value Guarantee is the newest addition to the Hyundai Assurance suite of programs. It eliminates concern about depreciation by giving Hyundai owners a guaranteed value for their vehicle in months 24 through 48 of ownership.
The 2012 Elantra sets the bar in the compact sedan category offering a "class-above" midsize car interior volume, modern design, outstanding fuel economy, and loads of comfort and convenience features, all at an attractive starting price. Elantra also delivers standard advanced safety technologies including a new Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system to optimally manage Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and the Motor-Driven electric Power Steering (MDPS).

Darren and Dan, thank you for providing the best in customer service. Great job!
"This car purchase has been one of the smoothest transitions I have experienced, thanks to Darren Conwell, the Sales Representative at Ohare Hyundai dealership (in DesPlaines, IL), and Dan Chatfield, the Finance Officer who led me through the financial arrangements, explained the extended warranty, accepted my Pontiac GrandAm for trade-in, and practically gift-wrapped my new car.
At the onset, I researched Hyundai’s 2012 Elantra on the internet, checked Consumer Reports ratings, & planned several strategies for comparing the 2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS and the 2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited; then, as a COSTCO card member, I went to the COSTCO website, identifying the car I was interested in purchasing: the make, model & year, along with my zip code. Immediately, I was given both an authorization number for purchasing a car at Ohare Hyundai, and also the name of the salesperson who would assist me in making a car purchase.
I received several carefully orchestrated calls & emails from Darren Conwell to see where I was in the process of selecting a new car. We exchanged a few emails; I needed time to think clearly & Darren encouraged me to do just that.
So, about 10 days after my inquiry at the COSTCO website, I phoned Ohare Hyundai and set up my appointment for Wednesday, the next day, with Darren Conwell. The next day, I met him for the first time; it was easy to recognize he is highly motivated, as he was neatly dressed, wearing a bright colored shirt & an enthusiastic smile. At all times, his demeanor was pleasant, courteous, & thoughtful.
I knew I was at the right dealership, & by three hours later, I had test driven one of the two cars he selected from the inventory. While I had to leave for some other personal business, I returned several hours later, “to finish the process”.
In the next three hours, Darren went over the “owner’s quick guide”, the warranty program, additional arrangements, & the pricing on various add-ons (I chose the paint seal), as well as the paperwork, reviewed any yet to be resolved issues & answered any remaining questions from me. He introduced me to Dan Chatfield, the Financial Officer, whose responsibility it was to clarify any extended warranty offers, explain the Hyundai Assurance plan that quotes the buy-back value of the car down the line, let’s say, in 5 years. Dan knows his responsibility & is careful & considerate in offering the customer the items that would make a perfect configuration.
Because I was using the COSTCO “no hassle-no haggle” approach, the buying process is simplified. Trading in my old car began with Darren and was authorized by Dan Chatfield. The only matter that needed completion for me was the “paint seal”, & they would take care of that the next day. Lastly, the financial arrangement on my part sealed the transaction. Dan Chatfield oversaw the state license transfer, & calculated all the taxes in the transaction, as well as the trade in of my Pontiac Grand Am.
As planned, I returned on Friday to accept delivery of my new “Blue Sky Hyundai Elantra as my personal celebration of my Mom’s 101st Birthday.
Friday morning came & Darren met me with his big smile; once again, he was dressed very business-like, wearing a grey, blue & white plaid sweater vest over a deep blue shirt, & dark trousers. Here’s a car salesman dressed to send one customer home with a new car, & yet, ready for another client.
For a couple hours, Darren Conwell reviewed the driver’s manual & guide, removed the license plates from the old car & re-attached them to my new car, checked for any dust & dings, made sure I left with a full tank of gas, & bid me “happy driving” ..
In the past week (of ownership), I have had 5 phone calls from Hyundai employees at the dealership & the corporate office “thanking me for my business”.
This is one special Hyundai car dealership with special people in sales:
Darren Conwell & Dan Chatfield!"

Hyundai Contributes More Than $7 Billion to National Economy
The Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in partnership with Hyundai Motor America today announced the findings of a study quantifying – for the first time – the automaker’s impact on the U.S. economy. Conducted by CAR’s Sustainability and Economic Development Strategies group and commissioned by Hyundai, the economic impact study finds that Hyundai’s U.S. operations and dealerships have contributed more than 94,000 private sector jobs and in excess of $7 billion to the country’s Gross Domestic Product in 2011. Included in the analysis were Hyundai’s manufacturing and supplier, research and development, engineering, headquarters and dealership operations, among others.
“The importance of this study is directly related to the importance of foreign direct investment and operations in the sustainability of the overall automotive industry in the U.S.,” said Kim Hill, director of the Sustainability and Economic Strategies group at CAR, and the study’s lead. “While the domestic auto industry restructured and contracted in recent years, international manufacturers have continued to expand their U.S. operations. Hyundai’s growth, and the expansion of its product development and manufacturing capabilities in the U.S., has outpaced the industry and other major manufacturers. When taken together with its sister company Kia, Hyundai accounts for more than one-third of the South Korean direct investment and capital spending in the U.S.”
According to the study, of the total 94,000 jobs created by Hyundai, approximately one-third – or 33,000 – is supported by the automaker’s direct employment in its manufacturing-related activities in the U.S. Associated wages and salaries are estimated at $2.4 billion. Hyundai’s dealerships support the remaining 61,000 jobs, with associated wages and benefits estimated at $3.5 billion.
“The study confirms that Hyundai’s expanding U.S. operations are creating and retaining jobs, thereby having a significant impact on the country’s economy,” said Hill. “U.S. auto industry jobs that are related to Hyundai tend to be very well compensated, leading to higher than average household spending and tax payments impacts.”
Key findings of the report include:
Industry
- Over the past two decades, the U.S. automotive industry has been transformed by billions in new direct investments domestically as well as from Asia and Europe. Much of the foreign direct investment has gone to areas of the country that were not traditional locations for automotive employment, in effect, stretching the footprint of the U.S. auto industry.
- Hyundai’s operations are a significant contributor to those states in which the company operates a number of facilities, notably its headquarters operations in California, automotive manufacturing in Alabama, and research and development in Michigan.
Earnings and Employment
- By choosing to sell and produce in the U.S. market, Hyundai has created jobs not only at its own facilities, but supports jobs across the automotive industry, extending into nearly every community in the nation.
- Hyundai’s U.S. operations contribute a total of 94,391 private sector jobs, with $5.9 billion in annual wages and salaries.
-
- Of the total 94,391 jobs, 33,313 are supported by employment in Hyundai’s U.S. manufacturing-related activities, with associated wages and salaries estimated at $2.4 billion. Hyundai’s dealerships in the U.S. support the remaining 61,078 private sector jobs, with associated wages and salaries of approximately $3.5 billion.
- Of the 33,313 jobs supported by employment in Hyundai’s U.S. manufacturing-related activities, Hyundai directly employs 4,116 employees and 1,083 Hyundai affiliate partner employees, for a total of 5,199 direct jobs. Hyundai’s direct employment supports an additional 9,074 intermediate jobs and 19,040 spin-off jobs, which are associated with spending by the people who work in Hyundai’s direct and intermediate jobs.
- Of the 61,078 total dealership jobs, 27,938 are new vehicle dealer employees, while 10,641 jobs are associated with suppliers to the Hyundai dealerships. An additional 22,499 spin-off jobs are a result of the spending by employees who work at direct and intermediate dealership jobs.
- The ratio of total jobs created to direct employment by Hyundai yields an employment multiplier of 6.4, meaning there are 5.4 additional jobs in the U.S. economy for every one job in Hyundai’s automotive manufacturing operations.
- The ratio of total jobs created to direct employment in Hyundai dealership operations is 2.2, meaning there are 1.2 additional jobs in the U.S. economy for every one job in Hyundai’s dealership operations.
Investment and Purchasing
- Hyundai, though a relatively new entrant into U.S. manufacturing, has already made substantial investments in its U.S. manufacturing infrastructure. Over the past decade, Hyundai, together with Kia, has invested nearly $3 billion at two assembly sites. These investments include construction of two assembly plants, as well as expansions at both facilities, including $443 million for engine plant expansions at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama.
- Hyundai has invested in numerous R&D, design and technical centers, service parts distribution operations, administrative operations, logistics centers and a U.S. proving ground.
- Hyundai’s expenditures on domestically-produced materials, parts and components to supply its automotive manufacturing facilities exceeded $8 billion in 2010.
“Hyundai is proud of our American success story, and of what our growth and job creation have meant to the U.S. economy, automotive industry and American automotive workers,” said John Krafcik, president and chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America. “With the majority of vehicles Hyundai sells in the U.S. now produced here, we are primed for continued investment and employment in the U.S.”

Hyundai Busts Out With Engine Upgrades
Hyundai Motor America already can't keep much of anything on its dealer lots for more than a few days, but the surging South Korean automaker is blasting off with a raft of major engine upgrades for its existing models that not only hike the horsepower game but generally deliver better fuel economy, too. Coupe lovers move to the front of the line, as much of the action (at least that we're allowed to talk about so far) centers on the sporty corner of Hyundai's busy showrooms.
At a media event here last week to detail the power plant upgrades, Hyundai officials said the company isn't letting up on its emphasis on engines that help vehicles achieve a 40-mpg highway rating (Hyundai claims the most in the industry), but said there's still plenty of engineering ability to improve fuel economy — or keep it the same — while squeezing out more power. Case in point is the new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and 3.8-liter V6 for the 2013 Genesis Coupe. At an event in Korea today, Hyundai confirmed a 30-percent power upgrade for the 2.0-liter turbo, taking it to 275 horsepower (or a little less in U.S.-spec rating) from today's 210 horses, while EPA fuel economy ratings are expected to stay the same.
For the Genesis Coupe's 3.8-liter V6, power is leaping from the current 283 hp to 350, largely thanks to the addition of direct fuel injection and other design upgrades, while fuel economy remains effectively unchanged. The Genesis Coupe V6 upgrades effectively mirror those Hyundai's already detailed for the 2012 Genesis sedan, but credit some of the Coupe's efficiency gains to a new eight-speed gearset for autobox cars.
Meanwhile, Hyundai executives also spoke again about the 2012 Veloster three-door coupe offering a turbocharged variant of the car's 1.6-liter "Gamma" four-cylinder. The rip, though, is that the company still won't be specific about exact horsepower and torque ratings. The compression ratio drops from 11:1 to 9.4:1 for the turbo, which uses a twin-scroll turbine to minimize turbo lag, and one Hyundai executive said it's logical to assume the turbo Gamma will be endowed with markedly more than 100 hp per liter. The Veloster's normally aspirated 1.6-liter job makes 138 horses, so our guess for the Veloster turbo is an output in the range of 175-180 hp. Hyundai sources admit the conventional Veloster is a lukewarm performer, so the turbo engine definitely is required equipment to bump the edgy coupe's street cred.
The company also showed a coupe version of the silly-popular Elantra compact car, which seems to emphasize the Elantra's signature sharp body side crease. That car will first be unveiled to the public at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show in February, while president and CEO John Krafcik also said there will be a five-door Elantra variant, too, although it's not decided if the car will carry the previous-generation five-door Elantra's "Touring" name. Don't expect any performance differentiation for the Elantra coupe, Krafcik contends. At least not at first. But given the freedom with which Hyundai's bolting on turbochargers and optimizing other engines for fuel economy, don't rule out some sort of Honda Civic Si-baiting upgrade for the popular Elantra in the near future.

Hyundai Confirms 204-HP Veloster Turbo Will Debut In Detroit
After much speculation, Hyundai CEO John Krafcik has confirmed that there is, in fact, a turbocharged version of the Veloster hatchback in the works. The turbocharged hatchback will make its debut this upcoming January at the 2012 Detroit auto show.
Krafcik confirmed the hot hatch last night while at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas, Nevada, and – as he often does – sent a tweet to Hyundai’s Twitter feed announcing the car's debut in Detroit. That’s ironic, considering the company used the same account last week to downplay the possibility of a turbo Veloster.
We already knew that this car was coming, and even have a good idea of what will power the veloce Veloster. Just two weeks ago, the automaker took the wraps off of a turbocharged version of the 1.6-liter Gamma inline-four cylinder that is in the current Veloster. That new turbo mill should be good for around 204 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, which is a significant improvement over the 138 hp and 123 lb-ft produced by the of the naturally aspirated engine.
Just as with the rest of its competitors, we expect that the Veloster Turbo will send all of its power through the front wheels. Expect transmission options to mirror those of the base Veloster, with either a six-speed manual or Hyundai’s all-new six-speed dual-clutch. No word yet on whether or not the more powerful engine will affect the Veloster’s 40 mpg highway rating, but don’t be surprised if those figures decrease slightly.
With 204 hp, the Veloster Turbo will sit mid-pack along with other hot hatches. It will best the Mini Cooper S (181 hp), the Volkswagen GTI 200 hp), and the Honda Civic Si (201 hp), although it won’tbe quite as powerful as the Mazdaspeed3 (263 hp) and Subaru WRX (265 hp).
