HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID TOPS SEGMENT IN AUTOPACIFIC VEHICLE SATISFACTION AWARDS

COSTA MESA, Calif., May 24, 2012 – The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid topped the Hybrid Car/EV category in the 2012 AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA). AutoPacific’s VSA survey measures how satisfied an owner is with his/her new car or light truck. This study by the Southern California-based automotive research firm summarizes the results of more than 75,000 surveys completed by owners of new cars and light trucks in the United States in the first quarter of 2012. Additionally, Hyundai finished fifth overall in the Popular Brand rankings.

“Owners have made the Sonata a star in AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction Awards. In fact, when the all-new Sonata first launched in 2010, owners gave it the highest Vehicle Satisfaction Score we have ever recorded,” notes Daniel Hall, Vice President of AutoPacific. “The Sonata Hybrid appears to be carrying on the tradition.”

The 2012 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards are based on scores developed using results from AutoPacific’s national New Vehicle Satisfaction Survey. Respondents to this survey are owners of new 2012 model year cars and trucks purchased from September through December 2011. Respondents rate 48 attributes for importance in the purchase decision and satisfaction after purchase.

“Having our models recognized in AutoPacific’s 2012 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards is a testament to the hard work and dedication that goes into all the vehicles in the Hyundai lineup,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “At Hyundai, we strive to exceed customer expectations in safety, quality, value and performance, and look forward to continuing to develop more award winning vehicles as we bring the 2013 Santa Fe to market this year.”

The Sonata Hybrid features Hyundai’s Hybrid Blue Drive system with a powertrain entirely developed in-house. The Sonata Hybrid can be driven in zero emissions, fully electric drive mode at speeds up to 72 miles per hour or in blended gas-electric mode at any speed. The Hybrid Sonata also features a lithium polymer battery pack, making Hyundai the first automaker in the world to incorporate this remarkably efficient battery technology into production vehicles. All Sonata Hybrids are covered by Hyundai’s Lifetime Hybrid Battery Replacement Guarantee. To view the complete 2012 VSA results, visit: http://www.autopacific.com.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Driving in High Wind Conditions

Driving in high winds can be dangerous and even more hazardous because of the other weather conditions that normally accompany them. Extreme caution should be used when driving a car in any type of severe weather.

  • Be aware of the other vehicles around you in high winds. This is especially true with RVs, campers, trucks, buses, or trailers being towed.
  • Slow down the speed of your car to minimize the wind’s affect on your vehicle.
  • Avoid parking near trees, downed power lines and buildings.
  • The main factors that keep you on the road are the weight of your vehicle, so if you are driving a little city-car along the motorways in the high winds, you should be more careful.
  • Plan ahead. As you have to drive more slowly in high winds you should expect your journey to take longer than usual and therefore leave extra time. You definitely don’t want to be speeding to make up the time!
  • Make steering corrections when driving from a protected to unprotected area. This is because the wind may move your car with a sudden force after being in the protected area.
  • Lower your speed when driving next to larger vehicles such as trucks and buses. These vehicles can swing out and hit your car if the wind picks up suddenly.
  • Listen to the radio for changes in weather conditions that could become more dangerous.
  • Wind is often accompanied by heavy rain or winter precipitation. Stay alert for slippery areas.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Caring for Windshield Cracks and Dings

Foul
Checking your windshield is important because a ding that occurs in spring or summer can cause a break in the winter. Most people drive more in warm weather and more driving means more vibration, which can cause a ding to expand into a cracked windshield.

Warmer weather also means running the air conditioning. "The shock of quickly going from hot to cold stresses a windshield and causing that ding to suddenly become a cracked windshield," says Jim Olson, director of national accounts and brand awareness for NOVUS® Windshield Repair.

Here are some tips if you have a ding or star on your windshield:

Inspect the ding. If it has a cone shape, a circle deep in the glass or looks like a small star with points spreading out, have the ding repaired promptly. These are serious dings that can grow into a cracked windshield.

Don't touch a ding or attempt to repair it yourself. Without special equipment and training, you will only contaminate the damaged area, making repairs hard to complete.

As a temporary measure, put a piece of clear tape, like packing tape, over the ding. This won't keep the ding from spreading, but will help prevent contamination.

Don't wash the vehicle-especially through the car wash.  Soap and water can contaminate the spot and a high-pressure wash can cause the ding to expand.

Driving a vehicle with a windshield ding causes vibration and exposure to the elements cause the ding to spread.

Avoid slamming the car doors and don't close the doors with the windows rolled all the way up. The vibration or buildup of air pressure inside the car can cause the ding to spread.

Don't run the defroster, heater or air conditioning on high settings.  Don't park the vehicle in the sun. Rapid changes in interior temperature or prolonged exposure to sunlight can stress and weaken the windshield.

Thank you for the 5-star review, Joan! Kudos to Michael for providing excellent customer service!

"Michael was very friendly and helpful. He showed me both new and used cars and I test drove 5 cars. I was very concerned in keeping my payment as low as possible and he offered me several payment options. After chosing a new Hyundai rather than a used Honda he went over the lights, wipers, radio setups, seat adjustments, etc. Michael offered any help I would need in the future. He introduced me to the service manager who was very pleasant also. I received a follow-up call from both the salesman and the dealership manager several days after purchase thanking me and offering any help if needed in the future." - Joan

HYUNDAI IMPLEMENTS THROTTLE OVERRIDE CAPABILITY IN ADVANCE OF PENDING GOVERNMENT MANDATE

Hyundai-offers-brake-pedal_throttle-600x374
Hyundai Bolsters Its Safety Leadership Record with all Models Providing Brake Pedal Throttle Override Capability

Hyundai continues its practice of providing critical safety technologies to its customers well before government mandates come into effect with all models now offering brake pedal electronic throttle override capability. With virtually all cars using electronic throttle control today, there remains the remote possibility for an unforeseen electronic throttle control malfunction, causing a vehicle to accelerate contrary to driver input. Although very unlikely due to various built-in electronic safety protocols, unforeseen circumstances could still exist that could cause this type of malfunction.

“With Hyundai’s brake pedal throttle override capability, any brake pedal input by the driver, even with a runaway throttle condition, completely overrides any throttle malfunction,” said Robert Babcock, director of certification and compliance affairs for Hyundai’s technical center. “It is no longer possible to have increasing engine power once the brake pedal is depressed by the driver. This adds a reassuring, incremental safeguard of control for Hyundai drivers.”

The government mandate for brake pedal throttle override capability, a component of FMVSS 124 (Accelerator Control Systems), has been under consideration by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) since April 16, 2012. However, its final approval and subsequent timing have yet to be determined. Hyundai development teams have been less concerned about final government mandate timing, focusing instead on the immediate safety and assurance of their customers.

Beginning with May production, fully 100 percent of all U.S. Hyundai models now provide the assuring safeguard of brake pedal throttle override capability. This advanced safety feature implementation by Hyundai remains many months and possibly years before the final government mandate, if approved.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Cold Facts About A/C Refrigerant

Mmt_air_conditioner
How did we ever get along without air conditioning in our cars? It’s a feature we take for granted until, suddenly, it’s blowing hot air.

In the past few years, many owners have discovered that fixing an inoperative air conditioner can cost a few hundred dollars or more, depending upon the make and model of vehicle. The reason is that the old standby R-12 refrigerant, trade named DuPont Freon, has been replaced by R-134a. Touted as being environmentally safer than its predecessor, R-134a has been standard since ’94.

If your older vehicle needs major repairs to the air conditioning system you can expect to replace refrigerant and the oil in the compressor in addition to the old components. You also may need to install a retrofit conversion. Do not allow anyone to mix refrigerants. They’re not inter-changeable. You cannot add R-134a to your older air conditioner without first flushing the system. Further, according to the Car Care Council, some substitutes are volatile mixtures of propane, butane and flammable hydrocarbons. Keep in mind the fact that if your vehicle is leaking refrigerant, you’re damaging the ozone layer.

An annual inspection of the vehicle, including the air conditioning system, may help forestall costly repairs. Ask your service center to evaluate your system before those hot and humid days of summer.
