Hyundai Offers Tucson Fuel Cell Hydrogen-Powered Electric Vehicle To Retail Customers In Spring 2014

Hyundai today announced plans to offer its next-generation Tucson Fuel Cell vehicle for the U.S. market for just $499 per month, including unlimited free hydrogen refueling and At Your Service Valet Maintenance at no extra cost. For the first time, retail consumers will be able to put a mass-produced, federally certified hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in their driveways, with availability beginning in Spring 2014 at several Southern California Hyundai dealers.

"Hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles represent the next generation of zero-emission vehicle technology, so we're thrilled to be a leader in offering the mass-produced, federally certified Tucson Fuel Cell to retail customers," said John Krafcik, president and chief executive officer, Hyundai Motor America. "The superior range and fast-fill refueling speed of our Tucson Fuel Cell vehicle contrast with the lower range and slow-charge characteristics of competing battery electric vehicles. We think fuel cell technology will increase the adoption rate of zero-emission vehicles, and we'll all share the environmental benefits."

FUEL CELL PRICING AND BENEFITSThe Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell will initially be offered to customers in the Los Angeles/Orange County region for $499 per month for a 36-month term, with $2,999 down. This includes the addition of a remarkable new addition to the Hyundai Assurance program –unlimited free hydrogen refueling. "When we spoke to customers interested in driving a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, many wondered what the cost of hydrogen would be," said John Krafcik. "To ease those concerns as we build-out the hydrogen refueling network, we thought covering this cost for these early adopters in the monthly payment was the best approach, and consistent with other aspects of our Hyundai Assurance program. It's our way of saying: 'This is another thing you don't have to worry about, we've got your back.'"

In addition, Tucson Fuel Cell owners will enjoy all the same services of the Hyundai Equus "At Your Service" valet program. As Equus owners have enjoyed since its introduction in 2010, should a Tucson Fuel Cell require any service, a Hyundai dealer will pick up the vehicle and provide a loaner, then return their car after service to their home or business, at no charge.

Customers interested in the Tucson Fuel Cell can indicate their interest (the first step in the ordering process) beginning today by visiting Hyundai.com.

The first four Hyundai dealers to offer the Tucson Fuel Cell to Southern California customers are Hardin Hyundai in Anaheim, Win Hyundai in Carson, Keyes Hyundai in Van Nuys and Tustin Hyundai, with additional Hyundai dealers to follow. Availability of the Tucson Fuel Cell will expand to other regions of the country consistent with the accelerating deployment of hydrogen refueling stations.

THE NEXT-GENERATION ELECTRIC VEHICLETo achieve societal goals of significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, more and more consumers will need to drive zero-emissions vehicles. Currently, there's an ongoing debate about the future of the electric vehicle, with two schools of thought:
  1. Store more electricity on-board using more/larger batteries
  2. Create electricity on-board with hydrogen-powered fuel cell technology
Developed over 100 years ago, the battery electric vehicle has made progress in recent years, with improved affordability and energy storage capability. But for most consumers, range anxiety and lengthy recharging time remain formidable obstacles to using them in their daily lives. In addition, affordable electric vehicle technology is best suited to smaller urban vehicles, not larger family and utility vehicles that many families require to meet all of their needs. Because of the inherent weight and cost of batteries, and the chemistry and physics that drive slow recharge times, today's electric vehicles have practical limits for many consumers.

TUCSON FUEL CELL ADVANTAGESHyundai is introducing its Tucson Fuel Cell to alleviate the limitations of traditional battery electric vehicles. The Tucson Fuel Cell maintains the day-to-day flexibility of the gasoline-powered Tucson so that its driver is able to immediately enjoy the next generation of electric vehicles without range or recharge-time compromises to their lifestyle.

The Tucson Fuel Cell represents the next generation of electric vehicles – those that create their own electricity, on-board, from hydrogen. According to UCI's Advanced Power and Energy Program's 2013 study, the hydrogen fuel cell provides lower total well-to-wheel emissions than a battery electric vehicle. For the Tucson Fuel Cell driver, this social benefit is achieved with greater utility, versatility and without compromises. Consider:
  • Driving range up to 300 miles
  • Capable of full refueling in under 10 minutes, similar to gasoline
  • Minimal reduction in daily utility compared with its gasoline counterpart
  • Instantaneous electric motor torque (221 lb-ft)
  • Minimal cold-weather effects compared with battery electric vehicles
  • Superb daily reliability and long-term durability
    • No moving parts within the power-generating fuel cell stack
    • More than two million durability test miles on Hyundai's fuel cell fleet since 2000
  • Extensive crash, fire and leak testing successfully completed
  • Quieter EV operation
  • Zero greenhouse-gas emissions, emits only water vapor
The Tucson Fuel Cell begins mass production for the U.S. market in February 2014 at the Ulsan, Korea assembly plant that also manufactures the Tucson gasoline-powered CUV. Manufacturing the Tucson Fuel Cell at the same plant allows Hyundai to leverage both the high quality and cost-efficiency of its popular gasoline-powered Tucson platform.

HYDROGEN RENEWABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONSThe benefits of hydrogen are well known -- required supplies for the U.S. market can be produced domestically and its supply is virtually unlimited. It can be produced by varied means – including renewable sources such as biogas. In fact, Hyundai's Fuel Cell prototypes have relied on hydrogen generated at the Orange County Sanitation District near its Fountain Valley headquarters, where methane from sewage is turned into hydrogen. Hydrogen can even be sourced directly from water, using electrolysis to split hydrogen molecules with electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar.

Further supporting hydrogen infrastructure development, California approved a plan in October 2013 to develop up to 100 hydrogen refueling stations in the state over the next several years. This recent California initiative dovetails with increased government support of hydrogen infrastructure development at the federal level, such as H2USA.

HYDROGEN: LOWEST WELL-TO-WHEEL EMISSIONSAccording to 2013 studies on well-to-wheel greenhouse-gas emissions (GHG) by the Advanced Power and Energy Program at the University of California, Irvine, hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles have the lowest overall emission levels of all alternative fuel entries. Well-to-wheel emissions for hydrogen vehicles sourced from natural gas are lower than battery electric vehicles, and less than half of equivalent gasoline vehicle emissions. Even more impressive, hydrogen emissions sourced from biogas are a tiny fraction of equivalent gasoline vehicle emissions, yielding an extremely high factor of long-range emissions sustainability.

FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGY: HOW IT WORKSHyundai's fuel cell effectively replaces the battery pack used in an electric vehicle by generating electricity from hydrogen through an electrochemical process that does not involve hydrogen combustion, with no moving parts within the fuel cell stack.

The fuel cell electrochemical process is as follows:
  • Hydrogen enters the anode, air (oxygen) enters the cathode
  • Catalyst splits the hydrogen electrons and protons
  • Electrolyte conducts the positively-charged ions while blocking the electrons
  • Electrons are used to create an external circuit, generating electricity
  • Catalyst combines the hydrogen ions and electrons with oxygen to create water and heat energy
  • A single fuel cell produces approximately one volt; fuel cells are "stacked" to meet voltage requirements
We'll keep you updated on Fuel Cell Vehicles coming to Chicago and AutoNation Hyundai O'Hare, so keep up to date on our Facebook.

Accent and Santa Fe Sport Win ALG's Residual Value Awards

Hyundai’s commitment to improving residual value paid big dividends today when ALG, a subsidiary of TrueCar, Inc., released the winners of their 14th annual Residual Value Awards. For the second year in a row, the Santa Fe Sport took top place in the midsize utility vehicle segment and the Accent placed best in the subcompact category.

“Hyundai has made great strides in residual values in recent years,” said Eric Lyman, vice president of Editorial, ALG. “The Accent and Santa Fe Sport are great examples of how the brand’s strong emphasis on feature content and value for the money helps avoid the use of purchase incentives, bolstering resale values and keeping owners happy when it comes time to sell their vehicles.”
ALG’s Residual Value Awards honor the vehicles in each segment that are predicted to retain the highest residual value percentage of their original MSRP after a conventional three-year ownership period. This year’s winners were chosen after consideration of segment competition, historical vehicle performance and industry trends.

“Hyundai is committed to becoming an industry leader in the areas of reliability, safety, design and cost of ownership, the primary components of value,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Receiving these awards from ALG acknowledges this promise to customer satisfaction, and speaks to Hyundai’s incredible value for money.”

These two ALG Residual Value awards join five others that Hyundai has received over the past three years. Santa Fe Sport, Azera and Elantra all received Residual Value honors last year. Elantra was also recognized by ALG for the 2011 and 2012 model years.

Now in its third-generation, the Santa Fe Sport is one of Hyundai’s most award-winning models. Built for today’s family, the vehicle showcases Hyundai’s cutting-edge capabilities through its bold design, impressive fuel economy, class-leading safety features and standard amenities. The Accent is Hyundai’s award-winning subcompact car, which continues to defy convention by offering extraordinary value and class-above features to subcompact car shoppers.

DESIGN

Since its introduction in 2009, Hyundai’s unique design philosophy ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ has evolved to the next level and the all-new Genesis is the first model to adopt Fluidic Sculpture 2.0.

While maintaining its original essence, Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 is defined by core elements: Simple and harmonious design with refined fluidic design elements, modern Hyundai look with a singular hexagonal grille, easy-to-understand and pleasant design and rich visuotactile color, material and finishing of the car.

Designed based on this new philosophy, the all-new Genesis boasts a premium sports sedan look with refined, ‘in-motion’ design aesthetics. A single-frame premium hexagonal grille makes a bold front statement, while fluidic and voluminous surfacing complete the side lines. Meanwhile, the high-tech, sculptural surface emphasizes the rear design.

Its interior design aligns with the premium exterior, adopting consistent design details that fully reflect careful consideration of ergonomics and intuitive operation. Tailored design specifications for all materials and master craftsmanship-level finish strengthen its premium image.

The all-new Genesis also focuses on Human Machine Interface (HMI), which lets drivers intuitively recognize vehicle functions, allowing for more convenient and effective use of those functions.
Switches are categorized depending on their function, facilitating easier control. Symbols are standardized for intuitive recognition, and the feel of the grip and control have been improved as well.

Starting with the all-new Genesis, future models will be designed based on Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 and its HMI principles.

SAFETY

The all-new Genesis significantly improved its safety in crash tests due to improved body structure and rigidity.

Its torsional and bending stiffness have been increased by applying more ultra-high-strength steel, hot-stamping and double-section structure on the front, partitioned engine room design as well as improved rear and center floor structures.

Passenger safety has been improved by the application of advanced seatbelt functions such as Emergency Fastening Device system (EFD), which tightly fastens passengers in crashes, and Pre-Safe seatbelt, which warns of danger in advance by tightening the seatbelt.

PERFORMANCE

With improved suspension and application of various advanced technologies, the all-new Genesis offers top-class driving and ride & handling performances. Greatly improved lateral stiffness of the front and rear suspensions and excellent weight balance contribute to the making of a stable chassis. Meanwhile, application of electronic control suspension such as Advanced Traction Cornering Control (ATCC) enables greater stability in corners.

Furthermore, Rack-mounted Motor Driven Electric Power Steering (R-MDPS) was first applied to the model with a variable gear ratio, which provides high-speed stability and direct response at low and medium speeds.

Hyundai’s ‘HTRAC’ all-wheel drive system will also be available for the first time on the all-new Genesis. The advanced HTRAC system electronically controls torque split between the front and rear axles depending on road and driving conditions, offering greater stability on slippery roads and in corners. It also allows drivers to select driving modes for a sophisticated and tailored driving experience.

Hyundai Santa Fe Named 2013 'CUV of Texas'

The all-new 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe has been named the 2013 “CUV of Texas” by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA). Issued at the 21th annual Texas Truck Rodeo near San Antonio, the win complements the Santa Fe Sport’s victory as “Compact CUV of Texas” in last-year’s competition.

“We are very pleased the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe has been named ‘CUV of Texas’ and proud to see that the Santa Fe family continues its winning streak at the Truck Rodeo,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Corporate and Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Given the fact that Santa Fe Sport was named Compact Crossover at last year’s Rodeo, TAWA members have further confirmed the amazing versatility of this crossover with its five, six or seven passenger configurations.”

Comprised of active TAWA media members, the 2013 Texas Truck Rodeo evaluated some of the industry’s leading trucks, SUVs and crossover utilities. In order to put each vehicle through its paces, the famed Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch, Texas served as the event’s proving grounds. With driving surfaces varying from bumpy pavement, loose gravel, slick mud, steep hills, jagged rocks and water crossings, each candidate stayed busy throughout the two days of testing.

“TAWA members overwhelmingly selected the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe as the Crossover of Texas,” said Michael Marrs, TAWA President. “Crossovers are important to Texans as they need vehicles that deliver on comfort, functionality and reliability. Hyundai exceeded those expectations and had the best product in the category.”

Entered into one of the most cross-shopped segments in the automotive industry, the Santa Fe topped tough competitors such as the 2014 Dodge Journey, 2014 Chevrolet Equinox, 2014 Kia Sorento, 2014 GMC Terrain Denali and 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. Hailed by journalists for its blend of value, mileage, capability and driving dynamics, the Santa Fe found its way up rocky hills, down steep inclines, and around sweeping back-roads all while returning impressive fuel economy and pleasing driving dynamics.

With two days of evaluation, TAWA members judged the vehicles on a variety of considerations. Aspects from exterior styling to road manners as well as pricing, fuel mileage, and off-road capability were all taken into account. Voting was conducted anonymously via electronic ballots.

The 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe is a new breed of crossover utilities with multiple trims, all-new powertrains and segment exclusive features and equipment. With a segment leading standard 290 horsepower 3.3 liter GDI V6, six-speed automatic transmission, and availability of either seven or six passenger configurations, the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe has rightfully earned the title “CUV of Texas”. Blue Link telematics and Driver Selectable Steering Mode (DSSM) come standard and help separate the Santa Fe from the crowd.

An all-new “Fluidic Sculpture” design gives the third generation Santa Fe the impact of constant motion while opulent interior features such as heated seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel give world-class comfort and amenities. Combined with 320 lb weight loss compared to the outgoing Veracruz model and an IIHS “Top Safety Pick”, a base price of $28,600 keeps the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe competitive in a very crowded segment.

Hyundai Adds New Dimension To Assurance Program With New Federal Employee Payment Deferral Plan

Hyundai announced late last week the latest addition to its Assurance program with the launch of a new payment deferral program aimed at helping federal employees furloughed during the government shutdown. Under the plan, Hyundai will extend all auto loan and lease payments during the shutdown for current Hyundai owners who are furloughed.

“We recognize the impact on family budgets that the furlough will drive,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “Like we did almost four years ago when we launched Hyundai Assurance, this is our way of saying ‘We’ve got your back’ during this uncertain time.”

Current owners in the Hyundai family will be provided relief from payments for as long as they are out of work. Furloughed employees who wish to buy a car in October will be offered a 90-day payment deferral.

It is estimated that more than 800,000 workers will not get paid during the shutdown. Like the original Hyundai Assurance job loss protection program, the federal employee payment deferral plan is aimed at helping workers at a time when they most need it. The program is available to any customer who has financed his or her purchase or lease through Hyundai Finance America.

Hyundai Teams With EGR Group To Build "Yellowcake" Night Racer Veloster Turbo For SEMA Show

EGR Group, a leading OEM and aftermarket accessory supplier for nearly four decades, is developing a custom EGR Night Racer concept based on the Hyundai Veloster Turbo that is guaranteed to turn heads. The racecar, designed specifically for time attack races at night racing circuits, will be showcased at the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas, November 5-8.

The EGR Night Racer’s most compelling cosmetic upgrade is a unique vivid yellow paint scheme. This custom-developed color, dubbed Yellowcake, was created by EGR in collaboration with the paint experts at PPG and Barry’s Speed Shop. With the addition of a Wurton roof-mounted LED light bar and custom ONEighty-branded headlights, the EGR Night Racer will be impossible to miss, especially on night racing circuits.

Modifications to the EGR Night Racer go far beyond cosmetics. Body rigidity has been increased significantly with the addition of a custom roll cage, and ride height is race-tuned with an ARK coil-over suspension and AEM strut brace. Bisimoto Engineering provided powertrain tuning expertise, boosting the 1.6-liter output to 250 horsepower, while oversized Brembo brakes, DPE 3-piece racing wheels and Toyo semi-slick racing tires ensure the power is kept under precise control.

“Veloster Turbo provides an ideal tuning platform for enthusiasts who want to modify their cars,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “EGR created a very special night-focused time attack car that perfectly showcases Veloster Turbo’s inherently sporty DNA.”

Hyundai Partners With Powertrain Guru Bisimoto To Create 1000 Horsepower SEMA Show Genesis Coupe

Hyundai is again partnering with the engine wizards of Bisimoto Engineering to create a 1,000 horsepower Genesis Coupe for the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas. Bisimoto Engineering is known for extracting awesome, reliable power out of production-grade, everyday powerplants, and the Bisimoto 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is no exception, with 1,000 horsepower generated from a turbocharged Hyundai-factory-based 3.8-liter V6 engine. The Bisimoto powertrain uses newly-designed internal parts, using the naturally-aspirated Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec engine as its core building block. The Bisimoto concept is designed for the reliability of a street car but with the outrageous power of a no-holds-barred racer.

“The key to producing reliable, high-horsepower engines goes well beyond the design, engineering and fabrication of performance parts. The core powerplant must be strong enough to withstand advanced modifications. The Genesis Coupe 3.8-liter Lambda engine is a thoroughly robust powerplant, and Bisimoto Engineering is excited to develop it to its full potential for the rigors of competitive motorsport,” said Bisi Ezerioha, owner of Bisimoto Engineering.

Complementing the extensive work underhood, Bisimoto created a custom Electric Blue paint, Denmatic design graphics package, ARK hood and Carbon Fiber decklid. From the rear view, a Burns stainless exhaust and Bisimoto rear badge round out the visual impact.

Hyundai Hope On Wheels, Congressional Leaders, and Local Children's Hospitals Honor National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month – a time to bring awareness to childhood cancer and recognize the young lives impacted by the disease. While pediatric cancer is relatively rare and research has created cure rates upwards of 80%, pediatric cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children in the United States. There are 15,000 new cases diagnosed each year and one in five of these children will not survive the disease. Hyundai Hope On Wheels® is a 501(c)(3) committed to helping kids fight cancer by providing funding for research and treatment, and through increasing awareness for the disease. Since its inception in 1998, Hope On Wheels has provided over $72.6 million in life saving grants.

This month, Hope On Wheels will donate $10.25 million to forty-one (41) children’s hospitals and institutions across the United States in support of continued medical research and programs that improve quality of life for children with cancer. Hyundai will be joined by members of the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus, policymakers, Hyundai executives and dealers, practitioners and patients as it announces the accomplishments of the Hope On Wheels program. Special recognition will also be given to the local Washington, D.C. area hospitals that have received Hope Grants; including Children’s National Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Top Ten Car Care Tips

We all know that one person whose car keeps running after hundreds of thousands of miles. "What's their secret?" you may ask. The best way to keep your car running far beyond 100,000 miles is regular maintenance. Here are 10 tips for keeping your vehicle in the best possible shape:

1. Check and change the oil regularly. Nothing will help your engine last more than regular oil and filter changes. Conversely, nothing will destroy an engine faster than neglecting oil-level checks or fresh-oil changes.

2. Flush the cooling system and change the coolant once a year. A 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water will keep the cooling system in good shape and prevent corrosion.

3. Change out transmission and differential oils. You don't need to check these frequently, but these fluids must be changed according to service intervals. Always use transmission fluid or gear oil of the recommended type and viscosity.

4. Keep your car clean. While washing the outside of the vehicle is obvious, things the vehicle has ran over can also get stuck to the underside.

5. Everything with moving parts needs grease to survive. Poor lubrication can wear on your car's parts, causing them to wear early.

6. Apply wax to your car's exterior at least every six months to keep the paint fresh.

7. Driveline components such as u-joints also require regular lubrication.

8. Protect the interior plastic by parking the vehicle in the shade, using a window deflector screen, and applying a UV protectant to prevent the plastic and vinyl from drying out.

9. Inspect, clean, and repack your wheel bearings with wheel bearing grease according to service intervals.

10. Replace your brake fluid once a year to prevent corrosion due to moisture.

If you need help along the way, just schedule an appointment with our expert service center!

Get Road Trip Ready with These Tips

Although Summer is almost over, it's not too late to take a late-summer road trip. Why spend all of that money on airfare when you can travel in style?

We all find ourselves yearning for the open road. Before you embark on a trip that is sure to be memorable, be sure to follow these tips we've gathered from across the web:

1. Get your car checked out. The last thing you need when you're halfway through the alphabet game with your family is to get stranded in a place you don't know well. Always be sure to get a quick checkup before going on a road trip, including an oil change, fluid check and tire rotation. Also, be sure to bring a tire pressure gauge and check your pressure whenever you stop. (Print out our Trip Ready eCoupon)

2. Clean your car before and during your trip. In the close-quarters that come with a road trip, free yourself from the chaos of clutter. Sure, now it may not bother you that your car isn't spotless, but combine that with the amount of trash you'll accumulate on the road, and it is a recipe for disaster.

3. Pack accordingly and come prepared.

  • It may be tempting to just jump off the exit for some quick fast food, but enough of that will make you groggy during your drive. Keep energized by packing a cooler of nutritious snacks. Not only will you save money, but you'll also be healthier and more alert to tackle the road ahead.
  • Be sure to charge all of your go-to gadgets before your trip. Also, invest in car chargers for your phone, tablet, etc. Although we think the road is a good place to disconnect, make sure you have your phone charged and ready in case of an emergency.
  • Bring a paper map. Before you see the dreaded "no service" pop up on your smartphone, make sure to bring along a paper map or a print-out from your go-to site for directions, just in case. Also, looking at a real map is just more fun and adventurous, don't you think?
  • App up your phone. Like we said, a road trip is the perfect place to leave the electronic, social world at bay. However, having a few handy apps for directions, road delays, and more are a good idea to avoid getting lost or stuck in traffic.
  • Have a basic kit for any emergencies that may arise. This includes jumper cables, a tire gauge, a gas container, duct tape, a flashlight/lantern, a first-aid kit, etc.
  • Have all of your documents, and make sure your registration, license and insurance are current. The last thing we all want to see is flashing lights behind us. But, if you know all of your affairs are in order you're much less likely to panic when you see red and blue behind you.
4. Relax! Don't drive all through the night. This is your vacation. Take time for yourself. Schedule stops and overnight stays so you can really get the most out of your trip.

5. And last but not least, have fun! And take plenty of pictures to show us when you return.
